Get rid of the MLK holiday and bring back Washington's birthday and Lincoln's birthday as separate Federal paid holiday's. They founded and brought much good to this country. MLK divided it. If it weren't for Licoln, those savages would be picking cotton today instead of rapping, appearing on Jerry Springer, and celebrating that no-good black, racist communist's birthday.

My opinion of MLK day is very similar to yours. I agree that MLK was a great man, BUT there are many men and women who were great in their own way, but are not celebratedâ€¦ We no longer have a President George Washington or Abraham Lincoln holiday. They were both great men and led our country during very violent times. We now have Presidents Day. MLK day should be called Freedom or Liberty day and honor the achievement of the civil rights movement. We have a MLK day to honor him, but I think a national holiday was created for other reasonsâ€¦ Lets see how much controversy there is when a Ronald Reagan national holiday is proposedâ€¦ Can you name any other national holidays that honor an individual by name?

MLKJ is celebrated for what you choose to celebrate him for. There is no guideline for celebrating MLKJ day that I know of. So if some choose to honor him solely for his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement, so be it. If you choose to celebrate him for his humanitarian efforts, then I think that is fine as well. I didn't make this a white vs black thing, you did by saying those words. 
 
I think you may want to rethink what Carol told you. Based on the email I recieved from you, this post is a misrepresentation of you and your beliefs and I think it's best if you let your readers know that. But if you enjoy personal attacks that you feel are caused by a post that doesn't even represent you well, or was the result of a lapse in judgement, continue right along with the charade. This is the last time I will reply in your blog, however I will reply to your email right after I get finished celebrating MLKJ with a day full of community service, worship (at the altar of the Lord, not Martin) and a review of the Promised Land Speech. Now Aaron what is a post without your friendly neighborhood "Angry Black Man's" comment. First I must admit that is just why we get along so well. I love the way you spark conversation (not stroking the ego so don't trip) with your honest view. 
 
But from the black side of the globe I disagree about this holiday thing. We have taken more days off for so-called white owned holidays for the longest. If you listen to the radio I am sure you have heard a few commercials advertising MLK Day sales. What's up with that? 
 
I believe this holiday was meant for all of us (regardless of color) to reflect on where we were ( not just as a race but also as people), where we are and where we want to go. It all falls back on the embedded anger on race issues to some degree. There are many holidays that actually do acknowledge some of the whites who have contributed to history's making but there are little to no holidays acknowledging blacks contribution to history. 
 
Benjamin Banneker, Frederick Douglas, Matthew Henson (whom I happen to be a decendent of) just name a few do not have holidays for their contribution. Black History month is just that one month when there are probably many more days that in my eyes deserve holidays for. 
 
Instead of just looking at today as just a day off try approaching it as a day to reflect and discover a way to contibute to grow amonst the races. 
 
I know you well enough to say I see no harm in what you wrote and what you wrote is just your way of contributing. You have not offended me.

No, Aaron, you have no point. In your attempt at a rebuttal you not only contradicted yourself but you also proved that you STILL do not get that MLKJ impact does not only affect African Americans. Do some critical thinking and come back. 
 
And I pointed out that Jr. had a father because you left off the J in the abbreviation. Didn't want to further any stereotypes you may hold about Blacks.. ;o)

If the issue is not with MLKJ (Yes, he had a father), why bring it up? Why not just have an entry to discuss the other holidays and why they are not celebrated as widely? I think the issue with you is with MLKJ Day and the fact that it is viewed as a "Black Person Holiday". 
 
MLKJ was a HUMANITARIAN, he embraced ALL races. So, yes he deserves to be celebrated. Do some of the other holidays deserve to be celebrated as well? Yes, but the celebration of MLKJ day is not determinative to other holidays being celebrated. I don't think there is a holiday quota. Take your problem up with the administration and put your actions where your mouth is. Otherwise, keep your non-related comments about one of the best humans to ever step foot in America to yourself.

First of all, thanks for linking to my article. 
 
Secondly, I never wrote this article to put whites vs. blacks, because that's the wrong way to go with having a disagreement about whether you should celebrate MLK day or not. My intent was to put to focus more on why I have to be forcefed Politically Correct agendas when it's those PC types who ignore our country's greatest days. Days which the country came together in one voice to fight against terrorism, tyranny, or sacrifice. Not one group, not one organization, not one political office.

I'm not touching this one today. But I do think companies need to get a grip when it comes to holidays -- Veterans Day is an important day, and should be considered a "real" holiday -- and not just a day to sell mattresses. 
 
I will say this about MLK Day -- it's not as widely "celebrated" as you might think. Some states don't count it as a holiday at all, and life goes on as usual.

I think I'm going to write about this on my own site, but honestly who do you know in mass quantities is getting MLK Day off, but not Veteran's Day??? This is all new information to me because I know of plenty of folks who still don't get MLK Day off. 
 
And no, I do not see an imbalance between these holidays.

I understand where you are coming from Aaron and I really believe that problem lies completely in the PC focus of this country. People can no longer express their feelings without offending someone to the point where they may get sued. I think that MLK paid the ultimate price for his beliefs and for that and the fact that he changed this country for the better he should be honored. However, I do not think that he should be held up on a pedestal any higher than the soldiers who died to take Iwo Jima or suffered through the Bataan Death March. We so easily forget the sacrifice that has been made to even given MLK the chance to say what he had to say.
